A Few Simple Tips For Proper SUP Board Maintenance

Introduction

So, you have decided to purchase a SUP board. A great idea, given how stand-up paddle boarding can provide you with countless of hours of enjoyment, excitement, and relaxation. However, to truly take advantage of your new board, in the long run, you will have to take care of it properly. For that matter, we will provide you with a small guide that will hopefully help you properly maintain your SUP board when not using it.

Sun damage

SUP Board The majority of epoxy SUP boards are constructed from epoxy fiberglass and beaded foam core. This core holds air and gas, which can reach extremely high temperatures when exposed to direct sunlight. This can, in turn, cause the air and gas to rapidly expand, thus causing the fiberglass skin to peel away.

To properly protect your board from sun damage, try the following:

  • Never store or transport your SUP board in a bubble wrap that comes with the shipment.
  • Make sure to keep it in a shaded area when not using it.
  • Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight.
  • If you have no other option but to leave the board in direct sunlight, make sure to use a reflective bag.

Structural damage

When subjected to extreme outside force, the outer shell of your epoxy SUP board can suffer from cracks, pressure dents, and dings. If you notice any concave indentations to the board’s outer skin, these are pressure dents. They usually come as a result of elbows, knees, or some other objects that exert strong pressure over a small surface area. These will not cause any severe damage, other than some tiny dimples. On the other hand, dings and cracks are usually caused by blunt force. These can cause the foam core to open and become vulnerable to the elements. If you notice these, repair and seal them immediately, to avoid weakening the entire structure of the board.

Inflatable boards

The majority of these boards are constructed from high-quality PVC. While they can withstand a lot of abuse, you should avoid sharp objects, such as glass and rocks. If you notice any small holes, patch them immediately with a repair kit that comes with the board. If the patches included in the kit are not enough, seek professional repair services as soon as possible.

Don’t forget that inflatable boards also feature valves too. To ensure its proper functioning, keep it clear of debris and pay attention to any unusual noises.
